Global Youth Service Day 2008 Fact Sheet

•    Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world. 

•    Millions of youth will participate in the 20th Annual Global Youth Service Day on April 25, 26 & 27, 2008.

•    The goals of Global Youth Service Day are:
  1. To MOBILIZE youth to identify and address the needs of their communities through service.
  2. To SUPPORT youth on a life-long path of service and civic engagement.
  3. To EDUCATE the public, the media, and policymakers about the year-round contributions of young people as community leaders.

•    Global Youth Service Day is a program of Youth Service America (YSA) with the National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC) and PARADE Magazine.

ABOUT WHO ORGANIZES GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY

•    Youth Service America is joined by a consortium that includes 120 of the largest national nonprofit and youth development organizations, including Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA, Camp Fire USA, National Education Association (NEA), Special Olympics, and the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

•    With support from Youth Service America and the State Farm Companies Foundation, 70 Lead Agencies for Global Youth Service Day host local, regional, or statewide celebrations.  Each Lead Agency engages hundreds to thousands of youth volunteers.  Lead Agencies convene planning coalitions, engage media and elected officials, and host opening or closing celebrations.  For the list of Lead Agencies: www.YSA.org/gysd.

•    Young people, schools, and youth organizations plan their own service projects throughout the country.  More than 500 of these projects will receive grants to support their projects this year, thanks to support from our Corporate and National Partners.

ABOUT GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY OUTSIDE OF THE UNITED STATES

•    Global Youth Service Day outside of the United States is organized by Youth Service America with the Global Youth Action Network as its key partner and a consortium of international organizations and more than 100 national coordinating committees in participating countries.

•    GYSD is celebrated in more than 120 countries in every region of the world.

•    Within each country that celebrates Global Youth Service Day, a National Lead Agency convenes a coordinating committee of multiple organizations. Together, they do outreach at the national level and organize service projects for GYSD.  A GYSD Secretariat located in the United States, with the advice of an International Coordinating Committee, provides support through communications, resources and materials.
