Position Functions

The Service-Learning Manager will work across YSA’s strategies and programs, reporting to the Sr. Vice President to ensure that service-learning models and expertise are incorporated throughout all projects, conferences, trainings, events, campaigns, grants programs, publications, and resources.  Along with all other staff members, he or she will contribute to YSA’s goal to increase the number and diversity of youth who serve their communities in substantive roles.

The Service-Learning Manager will be an in-house resource for grant recipients, students, teachers, administrators, school boards, policy makers, funders, and other constituents interested in starting or expanding their service-learning programs.  A key role of this staff member will be to ensure that participants in YSA’s mobilization campaigns have access to the necessary tools and resources required to accomplish successful youth engagement and service-learning projects, with particular emphasis on projects that extend over an academic semester. In doing so, the manager will bring consistency and richness to all YSA’s knowledge tools and resources, with the goal of increasing the impact of youth-led service projects on the volunteers themselves and the communities they serve.

This staff member will create and update materials as well as coordinate the team responsible for the development of educational resources to support the planning and implementation of successful youth-led service and service-learning activities, including those developed in-house or by outside consultants on specific issues.  Development and facilitation of skill-building workshops and trainings, presentations, and distance learning sessions will also be part of the manager’s responsibilities.

The Service Learning Manager will work closely with the VP of Global Youth Service Day, and the Communications and Information Technology staff to broaden the public understanding of the definition and benefits of service-learning while ensuring the public’s access to the latest and most effective resources on youth engagement and service-learning.  Finally, he or she will play a substantive role in collaborating with sponsors of specific initiatives to ensure goals are met, and with key partners on shared projects.

Specific Responsibilities


•    Collaborate with, guide, and support the YSA team responsible for the development of service-learning project planning tools and grants to engage youth in service and service-learning projects
•    Review and update YSA’s current materials to reflect the latest research and practice on service-learning
•    Recommend and create new materials that incorporate the latest research and practice on service-learning
•    Contribute to, coordinate, and develop new in person and online trainings and workshops to build the field’s capacity in service-learning
•    Collaborate with the IT Director on ensuring online resources are up to date and meet the public’s needs
•    Manage the creation of resources developed through contracts with outside consultants, including consultant recruitment and contract, collaboration with sponsors, content review and editing, through completion and publication.
•    Collaborate with Grant Manager for Learning and Evaluation in designing program evaluations oriented specifically to assess service-learning related achievements
•    Guide and contribute to current diversity and partnership initiatives to scale up service-learning
•    Guide knowledge and information management projects within YSA, including the identification and archiving of best service-learning projects to highlight in fundraising proposals, the media and public policy campaigns
•    Collaborate with Director of Communications and Outreach Manager in crafting language to support media pitches and policy initiatives on service-learning.
•    Provide service-learning information and technical assistance to YSA constituents, including grantees, service project organizers, teachers and administrators, policy makers, funders and others.
•    Serve as liaison to sponsors as needed
•    Serve as point person on program-related issues related to national conferences
•    Learn from and incorporate lessons on service-learning as implemented in other countries
•    Assist in development efforts by identifying funding opportunities and contributing content to proposals for service-learning programs

Professional/Educational Qualifications:


•    Solid knowledge of and experience with service-learning as an educational strategy and practice
•    Familiarity with service-learning networks in the research, practice, and policy fields
•    Comfort and experience in dynamic and innovative teaching, training, and presentation strategies
•    Demonstrated management and organizational skills
•    Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences and stakeholders
•    BA/BS degree required, advanced degree preferred, with work experience in primary, secondary, or higher education and curriculum design, youth development, and/or related field.
