WASHINGTON—(September 2, 2008) – Youth Service America, a national nonprofit organization that seeks to improve communities by increasing the number and diversity of young people, ages 5 through 25, serving in important roles, is offering 100 grants of up to $1,000 to support youth-led service-learning projects around Global Youth Service Day 2009. Educators and school-based service-learning coordinators across the United States and Canada (select provinces) are encouraged to apply. The application deadline for the State Farm® Good Neighbor Service-Learning grants is October 15, 2008.

Youth Service America, Disney and Miley Cyrus (aka Hannah Montana) combine forces to celebrate amazing young people improving their communities in a Hollywood-style bash, planned for Sunday, Oct. 5, from 6 to 11 p.m., with ticket sales limited to 5,000 fans. Tickets, go on sale at 9 a.m. PDT, Saturday, Aug. 30, at www.disneyparks.com/miley. Miley Cyrus took the world by storm as Hannah Montana on the hit Disney show, entitled Hannah Montana. The show is an Emmy Award-nominated television series, which debuted on March 24, 2006, on Disney Channel. The series focuses on a girl who lives a double life as an average teenage school girl named Miley Stewart (played by Miley Cyrus) by day and a famous pop singer named Hannah Montana by night, concealing her real identity from the public, other than her close friends and family. YSA’s Internship Program offers young people an opportunity to gain work experience in a national non-profit organization devoted to improving communities by increasing the number and diversity of young people, ages 5-25, serving in substantive roles. In a small and dynamic team environment, interns work directly with staff members on different projects that advance YSA’s core strategies in the following program areas: Grants, GYSD, Finance, Outreach, and Information & Communication Technology.

YSA seeks stories of youth who have overcome at-risk behavior or, have begun to heal from it, by engaging in service and finding fulfillment in giving back. These youth may then be featured in the book to be developed celebrating their example and their service. If you would like to become a part of this endeavor, please send all submissions, questions, and comments to amutima@ysa.org. Submissions will be accepted until July 1st, 2008.

Looking for a way to increase participation in your programs while connecting with the larger youth service movement? Apply to be a Lead Agency for GYSD 2009. Lead Agencies are organizations across the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, or the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario, or New Brunswick that increase the scope, visibility, and sustainability of GYSD by leading city, regional, or statewide service projects. Past Lead Agencies have been successful in garnering national media attention, developing new partnerships, and engaging elected and public officials in their service and service-learning projects.
