Youth Service America announces a new effective practices publication entitled Effective Practices for Engaging At-Risk Youth in Service. The guide provides an overview of the underlying theory and effective practices for engaging at-risk youth in service by examining the roles young people played – and can play – in serving their communities. The audiences for this publication are public officials, youth service and service-learning practitioners and teachers, researchers and others whose mission is to plan and implement community service programs for youth with diverse experiences and backgrounds.
Update: YSA seeks stories of youth who have overcome at-risk behavior or, have begun to heal from it, by engaging in service and finding fulfillment in giving back. These youth may then be featured in the book to be developed celebrating their example and their service. To learn more or submit your story, visit

The Youth Service America (YSA) National Youth Council (NYC) is a diverse group of young people from across North America that advise YSA in its programming, direction, and evaluation. The council serves as a catalyst for youth service movement by participating in projects that promote youth voice, youth leadership, and youth-adult partnerships. Applicants must be between the ages of 12-22 and live in the U.S. or Canada. To request an application packet, contact Daniel Hatcher, adviser to the NYC at dhatcher@ysa.org.
Completed application packets must be received by Monday March 10, 2008 (5 PM EST).
