YSA Disney Grantee Selected for YouthActionNet Award
  By Jon Camfield
Khalida B. has been selected for a 2008 YouthActionNet Global Fellow Award thanks to her work in advocating for the empowerment of women and youth in Khuzdar, a small rural town in the southwestern province of Balochistan, bordering Afghanistan and Iran.
She was also the recipient of a YSA Disney Minnie Grant in 2008 for a project linking athletic events to drug education in Karachi, Pakistan.  Here is her description of the project and the problem:
It is estimated that nearly 60 percent of youth here fall victim to any number of harmful drugs. The results are a combined mix of stomach problems, dental issues, and skin diseases. The more alarming factor is that the average age of afflicted youth continues to fall over time. Now a group of thirty dedicated youth will reach out to the affected population of young people by engaging them in an athletic event that will be as much about entertainment as it will be about education on the harmful consequences of drugs. Nearly four hundred children are expected to take a part in organizing the ground-breaking activity, and many more are expected to benefit from the project’s mission.
