State Farm Companies Foundation Supports Service-Learning Projects in Delton and Across America
The National Honor Society of Delton Kellogg High School will receive a $1,000 award to launch a service-learning project for Global Youth Service Day on April 25 through May 1, 2008. Delton is one of 100 State Farm® Good Neighbor Service-Learning Award winners chosen by Youth Service America and funded by State Farm Companies Foundation.
Dubbed “Petroleum Pushers Day”, the Delton project will have the National Honor Society members teaming up with Auto Shop, Family Living, and Business classes to provide area low-income families with free oil and oil filter changes. Students will be working in teams to change the oil, along with doing a quick check for other potential problems. A waiting room with refreshments (made by the Family Living classes) will be provided for family members.
This project is a student-learning style project, meaning students have created, written the grant, and are overseeing all of the details of the project. Grant writer and project manager, Jared Lindberg stated, “Our shop has the facilities. This seemed like a great way to help the (financially) hard-hit families in our community. Our kick off is scheduled for April 25th, then, on the 29th through 1st, we hope to service 50 cars. It’s pretty amazing when you consider that our project is one of so many around the world, and that over 3 million kids will be working on (Global Youth Service Day) projects like this at the same time.”
“The State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning grant winners demonstrate unprecedented global caring and initiative, showing the world that young people can be leaders today, not in some distant tomorrow,” says Steve Culbertson, president and CEO of Youth Service America. “By combining the dynamics of leadership, service and learning, the grant recipients build some of the most valuable skills— academic achievement and workforce readiness.”
"State Farm is proud to partner with Youth Service America. As our partnership has grown so has our respect for YSA’s work. Through its strong leadership, young people around the world are experiencing fundamental necessities of democracy - the ability to serve and give back to their community - while gaining academic and workplace readiness skills that are valued by State Farm. We share with YSA the common belief that our young people are not tomorrow's leaders, they are leaders today,” says Edward B. Rust Jr., Chairman and CEO, State Farm
