The League Chosen As Lead Agency For Global Youth Service Day Efforts Together With Newark, NJ Youth
  By Christina Wessell
Newark, NJ – November 27 – The LEAGUE, a national youth-service organization, will mobilize thousands of young people to participate in the 20th Annual Global Youth Service Day as part of the organization’s April 2008 Earth Day Event.  Sponsored by State Farm Companies Foundation, millions of youth in the United States and in more than 100 countries plan simultaneous service events and service-learning projects to celebrate Global Youth Service Day.

As a lead agency for this effort, The LEAGUE, headquartered in Newark, NJ, will bring to life Global Youth Service Day and its Earth Day service event by implementing the second part of a three-year program called Beautiful Newark; an initiative led by the students of Newark.  “The goal of this youth-led program is to lead, educate and inspire the community to beautify and clean the city”, says Insil Kang, Project Manager.  “The collaborative community effort encourages every citizen to pick up one piece of litter every day until the city is clean, and to plant one million flowers”.

In year one of Beautiful Newark, The LEAGUE harnessed the power of more than 40,000 students and over 300 adult volunteers who worked together to help beautify the city.  The students, community and corporate volunteers picked up litter, planted flowers and hosted other beautification projects around their schools and neighborhoods.   Again, this year The LEAGUE Beautiful Newark program will focus on environmental stewardship culminating in a service event on Earth Day involving every Newark school.  Prior to the event, LEAGUE Coaches (teachers) will use some of the organization’s more than 1,200 lesson plans to help their students understand their role in preserving the Earth.  These lessons provide young people with the tools and resources to help empower them to make a positive difference in the community – bringing to life both the learning and doing of service and character education.

“It is a distinct honor to work with such amazing organizations. Their leadership increases the scale and visibility of youth service year-round, and helps youth in America play a lead role in learning about community needs, while giving their time, energy, commitment, and idealism,” said Steve Culbertson, president and CEO of Youth Service America. “Millions of young people serving together on Global Youth Service Day performing strategic service sends a powerful message of hope and healing around the globe,” Culbertson added.

A program of Youth Service America, Global Youth Service is the largest youth service event in the world.  Global Youth Service Day is a year-round effort to expand the impact of the youth service movement. The initiative launches new service organizations, policy changes, and sustainable service programs to create a culture of engaged youth. State Farm Companies Foundation is the presenting sponsor. More than 120 national partners and 75 lead agencies throughout the United States organize campaigns. Overseas, national lead agencies in more than 100 countries participate.

Created by a consortium of business, education, government, media, non-profit leaders and youth, The LEAGUE empowers students to “get in the game” of giving.  It’s school and web-based.  Learn more at www.theleague.org.
