Win Money Designing GYSD Materials
  By Robert Bisi

Overview

Each year, YSA engages millions of young people in Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), the largest service event in the world. Youth service America is an international resource center that partners with thousands of organizations committed to increasing the quality and quantity of volunteer opportunities for young people, ages 5-25, to serve locally, nationally, and globally. Founded in 1986, YSA’s mission is to expand the impact of the youth service movement with communities, schools, corporations, and governments. YSA envisions a global culture of engaged youth who are committed to a lifetime of service, learning, leadership and achievement. We work toward that mission through four core strategies:

  • Organizing Public Policy and Awareness Campaigns
  • Convening the Field
  • Offering Incentives and Recognition
  • Providing Information and Educational Resources.
As part of Global Youth Service Day, we produce three tools for young people and their adult allies, including: Planning Toolkit: A Guide for Creating Effective Service Projects, Service-Learning Curriculum Guide: A Guide for Developing Project Management Skills, and a classroom poster. You can see last year’s tools at: http://ysa.org/GYSD/NGYSDTools/NGYSDToolsPlanningMaterials/tabid/118/Default.aspx.

The Contest

Youth Service America will recognize a graphic designer, between the ages of 10 and 25, with an award of $2,000 to design the covers and booklet template for each of these GYSD tools. In addition, we will pay an additional $1,000 for the winner’s help with incorporating our content into the winning template. The winner will also receive recognition for their work with a special paragraph somewhere within the tools. This is a fantastic opportunity for an emerging graphic designer to get their feet wet with a national project. The deadline for all entries is Friday August 10, 2007 at 5:00 pm EST. All must be submitted in PDF and sent via email. Entries must include designs for both booklets and the poster.

Design Specifications

Size Dimensions

The Planning Toolkit and Curriculum Guide are both 8.5” x 11”. The poster is 22” x 34”.

Logo Usage and Placement

The logo to be used for the toolkit is the official Global Youth Service Day logo, which can be found at: http://ysa.org/NatlGYSD/NGYSDTools/ImagesLogosGraphics/tabid/174/Default.aspx. The first logo is the one that should be used. It is currently called the National & Global Youth Service Day Color Logo. Please see last year’s logo placement for ideas about where it could be placed within the design template.

Theme/Look/Vision

This project has no theme or desired look or vision. Our audience for these materials is both young people and their adult allies. Imagine the poster being hung in a classroom or community center, the curriculum guide used in a classroom, and the toolkit used by a student or an adult community based youth worker. The design should appeal to this diverse audience.

Dissemination and Use of this Document

Youth Service America produces 30,000 print copies of the toolkit; 20,000 copies of the curriculum guide, and 30,000 of the posters. We distribute these printed versions through the US Mail, conferences, workshops, trainings, and meetings. An equal number of these documents are also downloaded from our website. The posters are hung in classrooms, community organizations, faith-based programs, and other similar places all over the United States and sometimes in other countries.
