Leadership Volunteer Recruitment Happy Hour 10/08/09, 6-8 pm
The Village Learning Place is seeking energetic community members to further its mission and goals through a variety of volunteer roles suited to every skill set and schedule. On Thursday, October 8, come speak with current volunteers at an informal happy hour. Check out our committee descriptions below for a preview of our 2009-2010 volunteer needs.
The VLP is a library, learning center, and community garden in Charles Village. Volunteers support all of our activities, from teaching urban gardening to kids to executing gala fundraisers. We have volunteer roles that range from one-time and occasional activities to leading teams and managing complex projects. We pride ourselves on providing volunteers a fun working environment and opportunities to grow and progress in their roles.
10th Anniversary Team
Monthly meetings November 2009-mid-2010; flexible hours and tasks outside of meeting times.
This team will plan and execute a year's worth of activities celebrating the VLP's tenth anniversary year in 2010. They will coordinate with the 10 th anniversary capital campaign team.
Library and Programs Committee
Meets quarterly; flexible hours and tasks outside of meeting times.
The Library and Programs Committee seeks team members who will bring experience in educational, nonprofit and library settings to provide objective, educated oversight and guidance for the VLP's library and programs. This team will define success for the VLP's programs, and ensure their alignment with our mission of providing efficient, forward-thinking programs and services to the community. This team is comprised of board members and community volunteers.
Facility Improvement Team
Infrequent meetings; most tasks will be outside of meeting times.
As we approach our 10 year Anniversary, the VLP could use some TLC! This committee will build a facility punch list for needed repairs and improvements. Additionally, committee members will communicate with prospective contractors to get quotes for work needed in order to submit proposals to Board for review.
Garden Team
Meet to work in garden every three or four weeks.
The Garden Team maintains the VLP's garden and works to plan and implement annual work and improvements in the garden.
Spaghetti Disco Team
Monthly meetings November - March; flexible hours and tasks outside of meeting times.
Be part of a committee to plan and execute the Spaghetti Disco, an annual friend- and fundraising event. Work on publicity, tickets, decoration, food and drink, donations, etc.
Village U Team
Check in monthly and meet roughly every other month; flexible hours and tasks outside of meeting times.
The Village U Committee plans and executes the Village U adult enrichment program, including Baltimore History Evenings. Find and liaise with volunteer instructors/presenters, work with staff to promote program and run special events. Help shape direction and scope of program, which needs volunteer support to grow and thrive.
2nd Wednesdays Committee
Meet once every 1-2 month year-round; flexible hours and tasks outside of meeting times.
Help to plan and execute 2 nd Wednesdays, a monthly cultural series for adults. Find speakers, promote program, plan food and decorations, etc.
Read Between the Wines Team
Monthly meetings March - November; flexible hours and tasks outside of meeting times.
Be part of a committee to plan and execute the VLP's biggest fundraiser. Work on publicity, auction, sponsorships, event logistics, food and drink, décor, ticket sales, etc.
Promotions Team
Meet at most every two months;
flexible hours and tasks outside of meeting times
Help get the word out about the VLP! This team will plan, execute and/or support promotional strategies for all VLP programs and events, focusing on general awareness of the VLP. This includes representing the VLP at neighborhood fairs and festivals, distributing promotional materials (on paper and online), working with the press, and giving VLP tours at events. This is a great way to be involved in a little of everything the VLP does.
Charles Village Festival Planning Committee
Help is needed to plan one of the largest special events in Charles Village. The Festival takes place the 1st weekend in June each year. Volunteers are needed to help with sponsorship, vendors, logistics, and promotions.
