Want to play an important role in a child's life?
Interested in getting to know a 4th or 5th grade student?

Make a difference and BECOME A MENTOR!

Building Futures Now (BFN) is looking for mentors for the school year (September - June) for our 4th and 5th grade students.  Mentors play an essential role in these students' lives by developing one-on-one relationships with students and supporting them during the academic school year.

If you are willing to make a 6-hour a month commitment and could get to East Palo Alto regularly, we would LOVE to have you as a mentor.

What does it mean to be a Building Futures Now (BFN) mentor?
•    Serve as a role model for your mentee.
•    Help him or her through difficult situations.
•    Provide a reliable support figure.
•    Spend time together to build and foster your relationship

What is the structure of the mentoring program?

  • You will be required to see your mentee a minimum of three times per month, for a total of at least six hours.  We take this commitment very seriously and hours must be reported each month.  This time commitment excludes school breaks (Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Spring Break, etc.), but we encourage you to keep in contact with your mentee via phone, email or snail mail when you have to spend significant time apart
  • What you do for activities is up to you and your mentee, with a few boundaries.   You may not drive other mentees if their mentors are not also in the car unless it is for a field trip and you may not drive your mentee’s siblings, even if you have parental consent
  • Your outings should not be expensive!
  • The mentoring program has a one-year minimum commitment and a two-year or more ideal commitment.
