Reading and Math Tutors are trained to teach basic reading and math skills through a structured program. Tutors are matched with a student in grades K-12 whom they will work with each week. They will also design creative lessons and activities to enhance the existing curriculum. Tutors will have curriculum materials, supplies, library resources and staff support at their disposal. Each semester, tutors will have an opportunity to review their student’s progress report to see the impact they have had on their student’s academic and social advancement.
Qualifications:
-No experience in teaching or tutoring is necessary
- Commitment to supporting the education of a child
-Ability to work independently required, Organized and able to meet deadlines
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
-Creative and resourceful
Requirements:
-Computer Literacy in basic Microsoft and Internet applications
-English, Spanish a plus
-Attend monthly tutor reflections/workshops
-Attend Reading and Math curriculum training and orientation
-Strong and progressive interest in community issues, particularly educational equality, multiculturalism and human rights
-Minimum 3 hour commitment per week
Remuneration:
Unpaid, but with excellent opportunities for professional development, leadership, and grassroots experience in education and community development. All public transportation costs are covered.
