If "Enging homelessness one family at a time" sounds like a good thing to be about we invite you to come join us at SSIHC where we do just that.  Volunteer mentors are the cornerstone of SSIHC's ability to provide the ground-breaking wrap-around services we give to our residents.  We need you to accompany one of the families we serve as they journey from homelessness to self-sufficiency as part of a team of 4-6 people.  Are you a good friend, do you like having fun with children, do you like to sit and chat over coffee, can you captivate a child with books and stories, can you pick a child up from school and take them to a doctor's appointment, or take a mom to a job interview?  It is also true that it is not just a warm and fuzzy experience - this journey may have big bumps in the road, and it will challenge you to meet people where they are and suspend judgement because you can not walk in another person's shoes.  This is also a long term commitment.  Families are in our program for 2-3 years and we hope that mentors can go the distance.  But for that 2-3 years your commitment is just 4-6 hours per month, and the truth is that many mentors choose to give far more than that.  Being a mentor is such a rich and rewarding experience that words can't paint a full picture, but if we have intrigued you please contact us and consider coming to our next mentor orientation.  There you will have the chance to meet other folks who are interested in sharing this experience with you, get to know SSIHC, and ask questions.  If you want to pursue this opportunity and SSIHC staff think you can do it you will attend a 5 hour training session, as well as follow-up trainings and support meetings.  Come join us in this work of empowering our community by empowering individuals.  Call or write Sandra Miller at 301.562.0520 or ssihc.sandra@verizon.net - we're waiting!
