Youth Service America

Youth Service America (YSA) is a resource center that partners with thousands of organizations committed to increasing the quality and quantity of volunteer opportunities for young people, ages 5-25, to serve locally, nationally, and globally. Founded in 1986, YSA’s mission is to expand the impact of the youth service movement with communities, schools, corporations, and governments. YSA envisions a global culture of engaged youth who are committed to a lifetime of service, learning, leadership and achievement.

Youth Service America created the first version of servenet.org in 1998 as a service of AOL. Today, servenet.org is in its fifth generation and is a website that mobilizes and empowers the volunteer service community to tackle some of the toughest challenges facing local communities. Since its inception, servenet.org has enabled millions of youth volunteers to connect with local nonprofits to make a difference in communities throughout America. In 2000, as a part of Global Youth Service Day, Servenet.org expanded into a global resource for the 3.5 million young people, in 155 countries around the world that participate in Global and National Youth Service Day.

State Farm
As the Presenting Sponsor of National Youth Service Day, State Farm Companies Foundation makes a substantial commitment to the Local Lead Agency program and Youth Service America's service-learning initiatives. This year, the State Farm Companies Foundation supported 100 grants of $1,000 to students, teachers, and service-learning coordinators for National Youth Service Day as well as service-learning grants for a project called Finance Lessons to support youth in understanding of the importance of personal financial education. State Farm also supports the Harris Wofford Awards presentation at the National Service-Learning Conference in the spring. The Harris Wofford Awards recognize extraordinary achievements of an Individual, Institution, and Media organization or member that actively contributes to "Making service and service-learning the common expectation and common experience of every young person in America".

In addition to financial support from State Farm Companies Foundation, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company involves their 96,000+ employees and agents, and their families in local National Youth Service Day events. State Farm's support of service-learning is part of the company's long history of investment in communities and public education. State Farm has integrated National Youth Service Day into advertorials that have appeared in publications, including National Geographic, Parents Magazine, and Parade Magazine.

"Service-learning fulfills State Farm's belief that strong communities begin with strong schools and a community investment in the lives and futures of young people," said Mindy Laub, assistant director, State Farm Companies Foundation. "Through our partnership with Youth Service America, we are helping students develop strong academic skills and supporting our young community leaders."
